Jason Clare is a Senior Lecturer in Sport at the University of Chester, UK, affiliated with the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Society. He has been a Senior Lecturer since 1997 and has held roles such as Programme Leader for the MA Sports Coaching and Development (2021–2023) and Programme Leader for the FdSc Sports Coaching (2006–2020). His expertise spans sports coaching, psychology, and community engagement.
Jason holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Sports Science from the University of Liverpool (1990–1993), a PGDip in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Chester (2005), and a PGCE Post 16 from the University of Manchester (1998). He also completed a Cert in Counselling Skills in 1999.
His research interests focus on learning climates and motivation, relational coaching, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, and athlete-centered coaching. He emphasizes research-informed teaching, integrating contemporary peer-reviewed publications into his modules.
Jason has over 25 years of teaching experience across various levels, from Foundation to Master’s degrees, and has managed collaborative programs with institutions like Coleg Cambria and Cheshire College South and West. He is actively involved in sports coaching pedagogy and community engagement initiatives.
He previously held academic positions at Warrington Collegiate Institute, including Lecturer in Leisure and Sport Studies and Psychology (1994–1997).
