Jasmine Saros is a Professor in the School of Biology & Ecology at the University of Maine and the Associate Director of the Climate Change Institute. Her research focuses on paleolimnology, phytoplankton ecology, and the impacts of climate change on lake ecosystems in Arctic, alpine, and boreal regions. She holds a Ph.D. from Lehigh University (1999) and has conducted extensive research on glacial retreat, permafrost thaw, and their effects on freshwater systems. Dr. Saros leads the NSF-funded SAUNNA NRT program, training the next generation in Arctic systems science. She also maintains a long-term observatory in Greenland and was the 2023 US Fulbright Distinguished Arctic Chair in Norway. Key areas of expertise include diatom-based environmental reconstructions, lake ecosystem dynamics, and freshwater security in cryosphere regions.
Her academic roles include directing interdisciplinary programs and advising on Arctic environmental policy. Awards include the Fulbright Arctic Chair, and her work spans collaborations with international teams studying remote lake systems. Research sites include the Arctic, Greenland, and the western U.S., with a focus on nitrogen cycling, glacial meltwater impacts, and ecological responses to global change.
Scientific contributions include over 14 peer-reviewed publications since 2009, addressing topics like diatom ecology, UV radiation effects, and GIS modeling of dissolved organic carbon in freshwater systems. She actively engages in public outreach through seminars and serves as a Program Director for NSF initiatives.
