Dr Jasmine Fardouly is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Sydney. Her research focuses on understanding how social media content influences body image, particularly among young women. She leads a program investigating both positive and negative effects of social media use, with a particular emphasis on interventions targeting individuals, social groups, influencers, and policy initiatives. Dr Fardouly holds a prestigious Sydney Horizon Fellowship (2024) and was awarded the NSW Young Tall Poppy of the Year 2024 for her contributions to psychology and public health.
Her research integrates psychological theories with real-world applications, addressing issues such as the role of idealized images, selfie culture, and digital social evaluation. She has also contributed to policy submissions on online safety and authored guidelines for mitigating social media’s negative mental health impacts. Current grants include projects funded by the Australian Research Council (DECRA) and the University of Sydney’s DVC Research.
Dr Fardouly collaborates across disciplines, engaging with policymakers, clinicians, and technology stakeholders to promote evidence-based solutions. Her work bridges academic research with actionable strategies to improve social media ecosystems and support mental health outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations.
