Dr Jasmim Drigo is an Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Galway, affiliated with the School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures within the College of Arts, Social Sciences, & Celtic Studies. Her research centers on Latin influence in Old Irish glosses from 8th-9th century manuscripts, analyzing linguistic interactions between Latin texts and Irish commentaries.
Her primary research investigates Historical Linguistics and Language Contact through three core dimensions: chronological patterns of Latin loanwords across Würzburg and Saint Gall Priscian glosses; semantic categorization spanning theology, grammar, daily life, and agriculture; and typological analysis of regular loanwords, calques, and nonce formations. This work re-examines assumptions about 'pure' Old Irish by documenting Latin's permeation into Ireland's earliest linguistic corpus.
Scientific Awards:
- Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship for 'Latinisation of Irish: Loanwords in the Old Irish glosses' (2024-2026)
Her research is supervised by Dr Pádraic Moran and contributes to cross-cultural encounter studies within Celtic and Medieval Linguistics frameworks, utilizing the 16,000+ gloss corpus documenting Ireland's 1,500-year language history.
