Jarkko Suhonen serves as a Staff Scientist at the University of Eastern Finland's School of Computing, Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology. With a career spanning over two decades since 2000, he has held various academic positions including Research Manager (2017-2022), University Researcher (2012-2017), and Professor at University of Joensuu (2005-2006). He earned his PhD in Computer Science from University of Joensuu in 2005 as the first doctoral graduate from Prof. Erkki Sutinen's edTech research group, which is now known as Technologies for Learning and Development.
His educational background includes a Docent title in Technology for Development and Education from University of Eastern Finland (2016), PhD in Computer Science (2005), and MSc in Computer Science (2000), all from University of Joensuu. His research interests focus on online, hybrid, and multi-modal learning in higher education, digital learning technologies, computing education, and ICT for development (ICT4D), with significant work in Global South contexts including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ghana.
Dr. Suhonen's extensive publication record shows a clear evolution from early work on web-based programming education to current research on AI and machine learning education. His recent publications (2022-2025) predominantly focus on computational thinking, machine learning education in K-12 contexts, VR applications for education, and ICT for development, particularly examining how technology can support learning in diverse cultural contexts. His work demonstrates consistent interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers across multiple continents.
As an academic leader, he currently supervises doctoral students, coordinates IMPDET online doctoral studies, and serves as contact person for computer science in the LUMETO doctoral programme. For the 2025-2026 academic year, he will be teaching the Research Methods in Computer Science course.
His research group affiliations include Global Development (since 2020) and Technologies for Learning and Development (since 2017), reflecting his dual focus on educational technology and international development. Dr. Suhonen has supervised at least 12 doctoral students to completion, with recent graduations in 2023-2024 on topics ranging from social media as learning tools to machine learning education in K-12 contexts and computational thinking in Nigerian contexts.
