Jared Rubin is Professor of Economics at Chapman University's Argyros School of Business & Economics. His research examines the historical origins of economic growth, focusing on institutional economics, religion's role in development, and the divergence between Western Europe and the Middle East. He is an award-winning author of books exploring how political-religious dynamics shaped modern economies.
Rubin's primary research interests include economic history, institutional economics, and the interplay between religious legitimacy and economic stagnation. His work employs game-theoretic frameworks to analyze how bargaining between rulers and elites influenced laws and policies, particularly regarding technology adoption (e.g., printing press bans) and financial innovations.
His scholarly contributions have been recognized with the Lindert-Williamson Prize for global economic history and the Douglass North Best Book Award for institutional economics. Rubin also investigates parliamentary power shifts in early modern England and the Dutch Republic as catalysts for pro-commerce policies.
