Jared A. Ellias is the Scott C. Collins Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, joining the faculty in July 2022. He specializes in corporate bankruptcy law, corporate governance, and empirical legal studies. Prior to Harvard, he was Professor of Law and founding Faculty Director of the Center for Business Law at UC Hastings College of the Law. His research focuses on bankruptcy's role in corporate governance, the impact of bankruptcy on firms, and the dynamics of creditor negotiations.
Ellias holds a J.D. from Columbia Law School (2008) and an A.B. in Political Science from the University of Michigan (2005). Before academia, he practiced corporate restructuring law at Brown Rudnick LLP in New York. He has advised legislative bodies, including the California State Senate on the PG&E bankruptcy, and frequently testifies on bankruptcy issues.
His research has been published in top law journals like the Yale Law Journal and Columbia Law Review, and recognized with awards such as the American Bankruptcy Institute’s “40 Under 40.” His work explores topics like private credit markets, bankruptcy director influence, and the interplay between bankruptcy law and administrative regulation.
Ellias teaches courses on corporate restructuring, bankruptcy law, and legal writing at Harvard. His recent publications analyze trends in bankruptcy governance, including the rise of private credit funds and the strategic use of bankruptcy by governments to advance policy goals.
