Janos Mark Szakolczai is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Glasgow, specializing in digital surveillance, artificial intelligence ethics, and societal impacts of emerging technologies. His work bridges cultural criminology with biopolitical analysis, focusing on AR/VR, AI, and smart device surveillance. He led a Scottish Government-funded study on Public Space CCTV (2022–23) and currently co-leads the DAARC project examining AR-related crimes. His upcoming monograph, Onlife Criminology: Virtual Crimes and Real Harms, explores virtual harms in digital societies.
Research interests include covert surveillance mechanisms, online toxicity, and resistance to digital control. He has collaborated with institutions like Police Scotland and the REPHRAIN Center on privacy and adversarial influence online. Teaching includes modules on digital societies, criminological theory, and research methods.
His recent work includes BBC radio commentary on child safety regulations, an art workshop on AR ethics, and keynote lectures in Italy on AI misinformation. He has published widely on pandemic rhetoric, surveillance capitalism, and the sociological implications of digital tools.
