Janna Levin is a Professor of Science and Assistant Dean in the Division of Liberal Arts at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). Her teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of scientific literacy for societal responsibility, aiming to equip students with foundational understanding of scientific processes.
- Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from the University of Virginia
- M.S. in Geosciences from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst
- B.S. in Geology with Honors from Bates College
Her research focuses on environmental science, particularly water contamination and resource management in regions like the Peruvian desert. She has also pioneered interdisciplinary projects merging science with art, including grants for initiatives such as 'The Forbidden Symmetries' and 'The Art and Science of Solar Cells.'
Levin received the UNCSA Excellence in Teaching Award in 2020 and secured funding from the R.J. Reynolds Foundation and the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts to support her innovative programs. She has held academic roles at Wake Forest University and Duke University earlier in her career.
