Janitza Montalvo-Ortiz is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, with a secondary appointment in Biomedical Informatics & Data Science. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from Northwestern University (2014) and a BA in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico (2009). Her research focuses on genetic and epigenetic mechanisms underlying psychiatric disorders, trauma effects, and their comorbidities. She co-founded the Latin American Genomics Consortium (LAGC) to advance psychiatric genetics in diverse populations.
Key research areas include PTSD, addiction, Alzheimer’s risk, and accelerated epigenetic aging. Her work integrates multi-omics data, emphasizing Latin American populations to address health equity gaps. Awards include the NARSAD Young Investigator Grant and the NIDA Diversity Scholars Program.
Montalvo-Ortiz leads the Montalvo-Ortiz Lab, collaborating with global teams on translational research. Notable achievements include identifying novel epigenetic biomarkers for PTSD and alcohol use disorder, and receiving the Pamela Sklar Innovation Award for LAGC’s contributions to psychiatric genomics.
