Dr. Daniel F. Levey is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University's School of Medicine. His research focuses on psychiatric genetics, particularly the genetic underpinnings of mental health disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and substance use disorders. He leads the Levey Lab, which employs genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and other genomic approaches to uncover biological mechanisms and inform therapeutic strategies.
Levey holds a PhD in Medical Neuroscience from Indiana University and completed postdoctoral training at Yale. He has been recognized with awards including the NARSAD Young Investigator Award and the Million Veteran Program Early Career Investigator Award. His work leverages large-scale datasets like the Million Veteran Program and VA Biobank to study genetic risk factors and comorbidities.
Key research areas include identifying genetic loci associated with PTSD, depression, cannabis use disorder, and insomnia, as well as exploring gene-environment interactions in mental health. He collaborates with institutions globally, contributing to studies on polygenic risk scores, drug repurposing for psychiatric conditions, and translational research.
Levey's publications highlight discoveries such as novel PTSD risk loci, shared genetics between ADHD and cannabis use, and insights into depression's neurobiology. His lab actively investigates biomarkers for suicidality and integrates multi-omics data to advance precision medicine in psychiatry.
