Janine Burroughs serves as Lecturer in Criminology and Criminal Justice (Professional Practice) at Brunel University London within the Department of Social and Political Sciences, College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences. Appointed in October 2022, she leverages 22 years of U.S. law enforcement and social services experience focused on youth justice, probation, and recidivism reduction.
Her academic qualifications include:
- Bachelor of Science in Administration of Justice, Pennsylvania State University (2000)
- Master of Science in Law and Public Policy Administration, California University of Pennsylvania (2007)
- Ph.D. in Sociology and Media Communication (awaiting award, submitted November 2024), Brunel University London
Burroughs' research critically examines U.S. newspaper discourses (2000-2020) on human trafficking, analyzing how media narratives weaponize the issue to expand law enforcement and serve political-capitalist interests through content, visual, and critical discourse analysis. Her secondary interests explore intersections of mental health with policing, elite deviance, and exploitation within international aid systems.
As an educator, she leads the Youth Crime and Youth Justice and Evidence Based Policing (PMB 506) modules across Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship and Degree Holder Entry Programs. She supervises student research projects and dissertations while serving as Lead/SPOC for Academic Support on the Learner Experience Team.
