Dr. Janina Pawelz is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH) in Hamburg, Germany. She previously led the BMBF-funded NEOVEX project (2020-2025) analyzing conspiracy theories and right-wing extremist ideologies during crises. From 2017-2021, she contributed to EU Horizon 2020 and BMBF projects (CRISEA, PANDORA, KURI) on extremism and security. She holds a PhD from the Leibniz Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) focused on gangs in Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, with prior studies at the University of Hamburg and Universitas Udayana (Indonesia).
Her research integrates:

- Radicalization Mechanisms: Pathways to violent extremism
- Digital Mobilization: Social media's role in extremist recruitment
- Counterstrategies: Policy interventions against hate networks
Publications consistently address far-right narratives, conspiracy theories, and digital extremism across European and Southeast Asian contexts, utilizing interdisciplinary approaches from political science, media studies, and conflict research. Her 2023 works demonstrate intensified focus on real-time crisis impacts.
Professional engagements include membership in WIIS (Women in International Security) and co-founding the federal initiative ‘Against hate online’. She has served as an expert consultant for GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation).
