Janice C. Humphreys, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a Professor at the Duke University School of Nursing, where she has contributed to research, teaching, and community service since 2013. Prior to Duke, she spent nearly two decades at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), serving as Professor and Vice-Chair for Academic Personnel in the Department of Family Health Care Nursing.
- Education: PhD in Nursing from Wayne State University; MS in Pediatric Nursing from UCSF; BS in Nursing and Psychology from Purdue University.
Her research focuses on the health effects of intimate partner violence (IPV) on women and children, spanning over 30 years of clinical practice and academic work. Key areas include chronic pain, depression, lifetime trauma exposure, PTSD, and the link between IPV and telomere length as a biomarker of cell aging. She has played a pivotal role in developing the Theory of Symptom Management and advancing intervention research in this field through international collaborations.
Dr. Humphreys has authored over 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including the award-winning Family Violence and Nursing Practice, co-edited with Jacquelyn Campbell. She has held leadership roles in the Nursing Network on Violence Against Women International and the Academy on Violence and Abuse, where she served as Co-chair for the Expert Panel on Violence.
