Barbara S. Turner

Barbara S. Turner, PhD, RN, FAAN is the Elizabeth P. Hanes Professor of Nursing and Chair of the Health of Women, Children, and Families Division at Duke University School of Nursing. She earned her PhD from the University of California, San Francisco, following graduate studies in hospital administration and perinatal nursing.

Research Interests

Dr. Turner’s work focuses on respiratory physiology and interventions for critically ill newborns. Her research explores:

• Maintenance of artificial airway patency in premature infants
• Impact of mechanical aspiration on oxygenation and intracranial pressure
• Exogenous surfactant administration and lung function

Professional Activities

She serves as Section Editor for Heart & Lung and contributes to editorial boards of other nursing journals. She is actively involved in the American Academy of Nursing, American Nurses Association, North Carolina Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International.
