Jani Marjanen is a University Lecturer in Political History and holds the title of Docent at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Arts. He is affiliated with the Helsinki Computational History Group and the Centre for Nordic Studies (CENS). His roles include supervision for doctoral programs in Political, Societal and Regional Change, and History and Cultural Heritage. His research focuses on conceptual history, Nordic history, civil society, and digital humanities, with notable contributions to studies on economic societies, Scandinavianism, and historical semantics.
Key research outputs include books like Contesting Nordicness (2021) and Economic Patriotism and Civil Society (2022), alongside peer-reviewed articles analyzing political ideologies and book-printing histories. He has received awards such as the Best poster award DH2019 and the European Heritage Award (2024). Marjanen has contributed to large-scale projects like the Helsinki Computational History Group (since 2018) and POLTE, exploring political language and Nordic cultural identity. His work bridges traditional historical methods with computational approaches, emphasizing collaborative research networks across Europe.
