Dr. Janet Whatley Blum serves as Associate Dean at Merrimack College's School of Nursing and Health Sciences and holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Exercise and Rehabilitation Science. She earned her Sc.D. in Nutritional Sciences from Boston University, M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Northeastern University, and B.S. in Health and Physical Education from the University of Maine.
Research Focus
Dr. Blum's work centers on evidence-based approaches to public health challenges:
- Public school nutrition environments and sugar-sweetened beverage policies
- Obesity prevention/treatment across age groups
- Community health intervention design
- Healthy lifestyle implementation in educational settings
Professional Background
Before joining Merrimack, she held leadership positions including Department Chair at University of Southern Maine and research roles at University of Nebraska and Westfield State University. She previously served as President of the New England Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine.
