Barry M. Popkin, PhD, is the W. R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of Nutrition at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. He holds a doctorate in agricultural economics from Cornell University and has established key research programs such as the Division of Nutrition Epidemiology and the UNC Interdisciplinary Obesity Center. His work focuses on global nutrition transition, obesity prevention, and policy evaluation, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. He has advised nearly 60 doctoral students and led over $135M in grants, primarily from NIH.
