Professor Janet Stewart serves as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Durham University, responsible for strategic development, financial performance, and academic leadership since her appointment. She joined Durham in 2014 as Professor of German and Visual Culture in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) and previously served as Head of School from 2015 to 2018.
Her academic credentials include:

- PhD in German and Sociology from the University of Glasgow
Stewart's research spans visual culture, energy humanities, and Central European cultural history, examining intersections of visual representation, energy systems, and socio-political narratives. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges humanities scholarship with contemporary environmental discourse, particularly through Austrian and German historical contexts.
As founding Director of Durham's Centre for Visual Arts and Culture, she pioneered cross-departmental collaboration and secured the Leverhulme Doctoral Training Centre for Visual Culture, establishing significant research infrastructure and doctoral training pathways in visual studies.
