Janet Njelesani is an Associate Professor at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, Department of Occupational Therapy. She holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science and Global Health from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on disability-based violence against children in sub-Saharan Africa, inclusive education, and developing culturally attuned qualitative methodologies. Dr. Njelesani has collaborated internationally with governments, UN agencies, and NGOs to advance disability rights. Her work is published in leading journals like African Journal of Disability and OTJR: Occupation, Participation and Health, and she contributed to the WHO World Report on Disability and UNICEF's rights-based inclusive education framework.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and professional courses on research methods, evidence-based practice, and occupational therapy foundations. Her methodological contributions include the critical occupational approach, emphasizing contextual factors influencing participation in occupations. She has conducted fieldwork across six continents and advocates for anti-racist and culturally responsive practices in occupational therapy education and clinical practice.
