Janet E. Garvey is a part-time faculty member at Northeastern University’s Program on Global Studies and International Relations, where she coordinates the Diplomacy Lab program. A retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer, she served 33 years, reaching the rank of Minister Counselor. Notably, she was U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon (2007–2010), implementing anti-corruption initiatives and addressing health crises. Earlier, she held key roles including Deputy Chief of Mission in Hungary, overseeing the International Law Enforcement Academy, and posts in Bosnia, Germany, Finland, South Africa, and Yugoslavia. In Washington, she managed media outreach as Deputy Coordinator at the Bureau of International Information Programs and represented the State Department at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies. Post-retirement, she has taught U.S. foreign policy at Northeastern’s College of Professional Studies and consulted for the Conservation Law Foundation on energy policy. She holds a JD/MSFS from Georgetown University and is fluent in French, German, Bosnian, Serbian, and Hungarian.
