Dr. Janet Berlo is a renowned Professor of Art History and former Susan B. Anthony Professor of Gender Studies at the University of Rochester. Over 23 years, she contributed significantly to Visual and Cultural Studies (VCS), Art and Art History, and the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. She holds a PhD from Yale University (1980) and has authored/co-authored over a dozen books, including influential textbooks and a memoir Quilting Lessons.
Her research focuses on Native North American art, Indigenous ecologies, and gender studies. Notable works include Native North American Art, The Early Years of Native North American Art History, and Spirit Beings and Sun Dancers. She is celebrated for mentoring students like Jessica Horton (University of Delaware) and Norman Vorano (Queen’s University), the latter being her first doctoral student.
Berlo’s interdisciplinary approach bridges art history, ecology, and activism. Her forthcoming work critiques misrepresentations in Native American art. She uses unconventional methods, such as Comic Sans font, to foster approachable scholarship. Beyond academia, she advocates for work-life balance and creative resilience, exemplified in her memoir’s exploration of depression and artistic creation.
Post-retirement, she continues advising students, editing manuscripts, and fostering collaborations. Colleagues praise her mentorship, intellectual rigor, and unwavering kindness. Her legacy lies in redefining Indigenous art history through decolonial frameworks and nurturing generations of scholars.
