Janet Bercovitz is a Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado Boulder's Leeds School of Business, holding the Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Professorship in Entrepreneurship. She joined Leeds in Fall 2017 after previously serving on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Business. Her academic career began at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.
Professor Bercovitz's research focuses on two primary streams: academic entrepreneurship and university-industry technology transfer, and organizational structure with inter-organizational contractual relationships. Her work examines how universities commercialize research and the structural arrangements that facilitate successful knowledge transfer between academic and commercial entities.
Her scholarly contributions have been published in top-tier journals including Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, Research Policy, and the Journal of Technology Transfer. Professor Bercovitz serves on editorial boards for Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, and Research Policy, and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Technology Transfer.
At Leeds, Professor Bercovitz teaches across multiple programs including undergraduate, MBA, PhD, and Executive MBA levels. Her courses include Economics of Organization, Entrepreneurship and New Venture Growth, Management of Technology and Innovation, and Strategic Management. At Illinois, she was consistently recognized on the List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by their Students from 2009-2017.
Professor Bercovitz currently serves as Program Chair for the Strategic Management Society Cooperative Strategies Interest Group and Treasurer for the Society of Institutional and Organizational Economics (SIOE). She earned her BS in chemistry, MBA, and PhD in Business and Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
