Janet Audrain-McGovern, PhD, is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Addictions Section within the Department of Psychiatry. She is also a member of Penn’s Cancer Center and Co-Director of the Career Enhancement Core for the UPENN-RU Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science. Her federally funded research applies behavioral-economic theory to understand how adolescents initiate and escalate tobacco use and to develop innovative cessation interventions that minimise post-quit weight gain.
Research Interests:
- Smoking cessation and relapse prevention
- Adolescent uptake of e-cigarettes and dual use of tobacco products
- Behavioral-economic predictors of addiction trajectories
- Gut–brain–behavior interactions influencing post-cessation weight change
- Human laboratory and clinical-trial evaluation of incentive-based interventions
Across more than two dozen recent articles she has consistently advanced two themes: (1) epidemiological surveillance of youth vaping and subsequent combustible-cigarette use, and (2) translation of behavioral-economic insights into scalable cessation treatments that address multiple co-occurring risk behaviors.
Grant & Center Leadership:
- Director, Career Development Core, four successive NCI P50 tobacco research centers
- Co-Director, Career Enhancement Core, FDA/NIH-funded Tobacco Center of Regulatory Science (UPENN-RU TCORS)
- Multiple R01 and U01 awards testing microbiome-informed and incentive-based cessation strategies
She mentors early-career scientists across disciplines and her team collaborates broadly with behavioral economists, neuro-imagers, microbiome researchers, and policy analysts to integrate mechanistic and population-level insights.
