Janel A George is an Associate Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center and founder/director of the Racial Equity in Education Law and Policy Clinic (REEL Policy Clinic). The clinic advances racial equity through policy advocacy targeting discriminatory school discipline, police presence in schools, segregation, and resource inequities affecting students of color.
Her educational background includes:
- University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School: J.D.
- Spelman College: B.A. with Honors in English
George's research employs Critical Race Theory to analyze how laws reproduce racial inequalities in education and identifies legislative solutions. Her scholarship consistently focuses on policy interventions for school discipline disparities and segregation, emphasizing the experiences of students of color through frameworks like the school-to-prison pipeline. She connects theoretical analysis with practical advocacy in media commentary for CNN, Education Week, and Teen Vogue.
As clinic director, George mentors student attorneys in legislative lawyering skills including testimony drafting, coalition-building, and administrative advocacy. Her prior career includes civil rights work with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and congressional staffing experience.
The REEL Policy Clinic operates as both a student training program and policy advocacy hub, conducting client-centered work on legislative interventions while examining the federal government's role in advancing educational equity.
