Jane Tolmie is an Associate Professor in Gender Studies at Queen's University, cross-appointed to the Department of English and affiliated with the Cultural Studies graduate program. She holds a DPhil from Oxford University and a PhD from Harvard University, with additional degrees from Yale. Her research focuses on comics, feminist and queer theory, disability studies, medieval literature, and performance studies. She actively engages in public scholarship through blogs (HuffPo), CBC radio interviews, and advocacy for fan culture rights, notably contributing to a U.S. Copyright Office case in 2011.
Her publications include works on Alison Bechdel’s *Fun Home*, Lynda Barry’s art, and collaborative projects like *The Book of Vole*. She is a poet and feminist activist, emphasizing reproductive justice and art activism. Awards include an Eisner Award nomination for her edited volume *Drawing from Life: Memory and Subjectivity in Comic Art* (2013).
Tolmie supervises students in Gender Studies, English, and Cultural Studies, focusing on interdisciplinary topics. She advocates for academic-public engagement, particularly in fan studies and critical disability narratives. Her recent work explores comics as tools for social justice, reflecting her commitment to merging scholarly and artistic activism.
