Jane Nicholas is a Professor jointly appointed in the Department of History and Department of Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies at St. Jerome's University, University of Waterloo. She holds a PhD from the University of Waterloo, an MA from Queen's University, and a BA from Lakehead University. Her work bridges Canadian cultural history, gender studies, and the history of the body, with specific focus on beauty standards, freakery, and embodied emotions.
Her research employs intersectional methodologies to deconstruct 'natural' bodily categories through institutions like freak shows. Current work explores child death and grief in historical Ontario. Key publications analyze synchronized swimming's gender dynamics, cosmetics' role in femininity construction, and ethics in exhibiting marginalized bodies.
