Jane Maguire

Professor Jane Maguire is a distinguished Professor of Nursing at the University of Technology Sydney's School of Nursing and Midwifery, where she has been employed since February 2017. Previously, she served as Associate Professor (2014-2017) and Senior Lecturer (2011-2014) at the University of Newcastle Australia. She was Deputy Head of School (Research) from March 2020 to June 2024 and maintains active roles in the Faculty of Health Climate Change & Health Research Collaborative, INSIGHT Research Centre, and Stroke Research Collaborative Network.

Professor Maguire earned her PhD in Public Health and Medicine from the University of Newcastle in 2010, following a Bachelor of Nursing (1999) and Bachelor of Arts (1995). With over 20 years of clinical experience as a pediatric nurse before entering academia, she remains a registered nurse since 1983. Her research expertise spans stroke genetics, genomic education for nurses, cardiovascular outcomes, older person research, and planetary health initiatives, employing diverse methodologies including genome-wide association studies, longitudinal studies, and mixed-methods approaches.

Her research output demonstrates a clear trajectory toward integrating genomic medicine with nursing practice and addressing planetary health challenges. The most recent publications (2024-2025) increasingly focus on sustainability in healthcare education, genomic nursing competencies across cultures, and advanced stroke outcome prediction using novel imaging and genetic markers. Her work with GISCOME has established foundational knowledge in stroke functional outcomes while her newer planetary health research represents an important expansion of her scholarly impact.

Professor Maguire has successfully supervised 5 doctoral students to completion in the last 5 years and currently mentors 12 doctoral candidates from Finland, Sweden, Thailand, Japan, and Norway. Her grant portfolio includes significant funding from the Stroke Foundation, NHMRC, and Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia, totaling over $3 million. She leads the Genomic Education for Nurses program and serves as a tri-leader of the international GISCOME network. Her laboratory work centers on the Stroke Research Collaborative Network, where her team investigates genetic influences on stroke outcomes through large-scale international collaborations.
