Jane M. Kanowitz, MD is an Assistant Professor of Medicine specializing in Medical Oncology at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as the Medical Director at Smilow Cancer Hospital in North Haven and is affiliated with Yale Cancer Center and Yale Medicine.
Dr. Kanowitz received her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College in 1990 and completed her residency at Saint Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in 1993. She furthered her training with a fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 1995.
With over 25 years of experience as a medical oncologist, Dr. Kanowitz has developed special expertise in women's cancers and geriatrics. Her clinical focus includes breast, colon, lung, and ovarian cancers. She has previously served as medical director for oncology services at Bristol Hospital Cancer Care Center and established an accredited breast cancer program at Mid-Hudson Hematology/Oncology in Cornwall, NY.
Her research interests center on optimizing cancer treatment for older adults, as evidenced by her 2021 publication on implementing the Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG) tool in ambulatory oncology settings to improve treatment selection.
As a sub-investigator, Dr. Kanowitz is actively involved in multiple clinical trials across various cancer types including lymphoma, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, and multiple myeloma.
Board certified in Medical Oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine since 1995 (with recertification in 2015), Dr. Kanowitz is known for her compassionate approach to patient care, with patients praising her warmth, concern, and humor.
