Professor Jane L. Lightfoot is a Professor of Greek Literature at the University of Oxford, affiliated with New College as Charlton Fellow and Tutor in Classics. Her academic journey includes positions at St John’s College, All Souls College, and her current role since 2003. She holds an MA and DPhil from Oxford and is a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA). Her research focuses on unexplored ancient texts, blending editorial rigor with contextual analysis of Hellenistic and Imperial poetry, oracles, ethnography, astrology, and medicine.
Her methodological approach emphasizes meticulous excavation of manuscript traditions, linguistic analysis, and intellectual contexts. Notable publications include editions of Parthenius, Lucian, the Sibylline Oracles, and Pseudo-Manetho’s astrological poetry. Current projects include studies on medical texts from antiquity.
Teaching responsibilities encompass epic papers for Mods and Greek literary courses for Greats. Her work bridges textual scholarship with interdisciplinary exploration of ancient intellectual traditions, consistently expanding the frontiers of classical studies.
