Jane Hatter is an Associate Professor and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Utah's School of Music, where she has held a faculty appointment since July 2021. Her academic work centers on cultural musicology with emphasis on fifteenth and sixteenth-century European musical contexts.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD, Schulich School of Music, McGill University
- MA, Schulich School of Music, McGill University
- BM, University of the Pacific
Hatter's research investigates musical communities beyond canonical composers, focusing on women's roles, gender performance, and intersections between music and visual culture in early modern Europe. Her acclaimed monograph Composing Community in Late Medieval Music (Cambridge University Press, 2019) examines self-referential practices in late medieval compositions. She has published extensively on motets, Marian devotions, and the sonic dimensions of women's rituals, consistently bridging musicology with gender studies and art history.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals sustained engagement with how musical communities navigated religious transformation during the Reformation era, particularly through adaptations of Catholic rituals in Protestant contexts. Her work demonstrates sophisticated interdisciplinary methodology connecting music to visual culture, gender performance, and communal identity formation.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Faculty Excellence Award in Research (University of Utah College of Fine Arts, 2020)
- Publication subvention (American Musicological Society, 2018)
- Faculty Fellow Award (University Research Council, 2017)
Professor Hatter actively mentors graduate students through thesis supervision and specialized seminars while contributing to academic governance as Chair of the American Musicological Society's Committee on Women and Gender. Her community engagement includes pre-concert lectures for Utopia Early Music and organizing the Park City summit on Josquin's Missa Pange lingua, demonstrating commitment to public scholarship.
Though not leading a formal laboratory, her collaborative editorial projects like the Early Music special issue on 'Early Modern Commemorations' exemplify her interdisciplinary team-based research approach.
