Jane Bunting

Dr. Jane Bunting is a Professor in Geography at the University of Hull, affiliated with the School of Environmental Sciences. She specializes in long-term ecological dynamics of cultural landscapes, particularly using pollen records for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Her academic journey began at the University of Cambridge, where she earned a BA in Botany (1987-1990) and a PhD in Environmental History (1990-1993). She joined Hull as a Lecturer in 1997 and has since held leadership roles, including coordinating the Virtual Palaeosciences (ViPs) project to enhance digital teaching resources.

Her research interests span palaeoecology, ecology and climate change, and cultural landscapes. She collaborates internationally with groups like PolLandCal and PAGES LandCover6k. Teaching focuses on conservation, environmental change science, and research methods, emphasizing inclusivity for first-generation university students.

Bunting leads major grants such as the £583k RESPECT project on peatland environments and the £1.5k Virtual Palaeoscience initiative. She supervises PhD students exploring pollen-vegetation relationships and paleoenvironmental modeling. Her work bridges ecology and archaeology, advocating for interdisciplinary publishing to connect long-term and modern ecological insights.
