Jane Bleasel

Professor Jane Bleasel is the Head of School and Dean of the Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. She holds dual affiliations with the Sydney Medical School and the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Previously, she served as Head of School of Medicine and Public Health and Dean of the Joint Medical Program at the University of Newcastle (2022–2025). She leads strategic initiatives in medical education, including the rural-based Doctor of Medicine (MD) program in Dubbo and the redesign of the MD2020 curriculum emphasizing innovative pedagogies.

Education: MBBS (University of Sydney, 1984), PhD in Medicine (University of Sydney, 1998), Master of Health Professional Education (Monash), and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Her research focuses on medical education innovation, rheumatology, and healthcare access improvement. She has held leadership roles in rheumatology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (2000–2015) and collaborated with institutions like Hunter New England Local Health District.

Research interests span medical curriculum design, interprofessional education, and rheumatology clinical practice. Key achievements include advancing rural medical training, establishing flexible learning pathways for rural healthcare workers, and improving interstitial lung disease diagnosis protocols. She has secured grants for initiatives like interprofessional clinical teacher training and student-led health clinics.

Notable awards include the Principal Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, evidenced by grants such as the 2025 Faculty of Medicine and Health Start-up Scheme and the 2017 Small Educational Innovation Grant for team-teaching strategies.
