Professor Jane Alty is a clinician-scientist and educator in Neurology at the University of Tasmania's Wicking Dementia Research Education Centre and School of Medicine. Her roles include Director of the ISLAND Cognitive Clinic, Staff Specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital (80% University, 20% Hospital), and Co-Chief Investigator on multiple grants. She holds a Professorship in Neurology since 2025, previously promoted from Associate Professor (2022).
Education: MB BChir (Distinction) and MD (PhD equivalent) from the University of Cambridge and York. Completed a Movement Disorders Fellowship at Monash Medical Centre and postdoctoral research in AI-neuroscience at the University of York. Trained in Neurology across Leeds, Manchester, and London hospitals.
Research Interests: Early detection of neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s) using AI-driven biomarkers, digital health tools (e.g., TAS Test, TapTalk app), and interdisciplinary clinical care. Her work emphasizes low-cost, scalable tests for population screening and early intervention.
Publications & Grants: Over 100 peer-reviewed papers, 3 textbooks, and $4M+ in funding (e.g., NHMRC Ideas Grants, MHFF). Key projects include the TAS Test, BRAIN Project, and Tasmania Parkinson’s Project.
Awards: 2023 Vice Chancellor’s Trailblazing Research Award, Tasmanian STEM Finalist, Clinical Excellence Awards, and international research innovation recognition.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Wicking Centre’s Neurology research group, collaborates with ISLAND Project (14,000 participants) and the National Parkinson’s Alliance. Her team includes 6 PhD students and interdisciplinary researchers in computer science, psychology, and neuroscience.
