Janani Sridhar

Janani Sridhar serves as Assistant Professor of Voice and Voice Area Coordinator at DePauw University, bringing an internationally acclaimed performance career to her teaching. A first-prize winner at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod (competing against over 6,000 artists), she has performed leading operatic roles with companies including Singapore Lyric Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera, and concert repertoire with orchestras such as the Singapore Symphony and Shreveport Symphony.

Her academic credentials include a Bachelor of Music from Oberlin Conservatory, Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University. Dr. Sridhar's performance expertise spans classical opera, concert works, and contemporary premieres, including the world premiere of "Yeltsin in Texas!" and participation in the Fort Worth Opera's Frontiers festival.

Research interests focus on vocal pedagogy, operatic performance practice, and the promotion of contemporary works by diverse composers. Her recent recitals have highlighted repertoire by composers of color, reflecting a commitment to expanding the vocal canon. Dr. Sridhar's teaching philosophy cultivates both technical mastery and artistic individuality, evidenced by students achieving top marks in examinations and competitions.

Among her extensive honors are the HSBC Youth Excellence Award (first singer recipient) and 14 major competition prizes:

As an educator, Dr. Sridhar has taught at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Centenary College of Louisiana. Her students consistently excel in statewide examinations and competitions, securing chairs in regional choirs. She serves as an adjudicator for the Texas Private School Music Educators Association and National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Dr. Sridhar maintains an active global performance schedule, recently appearing at Carnegie Hall in Poulenc's Gloria and preparing for Mozart's Requiem. She collaborates with contemporary music initiatives including LOLA and the Cincinnati Song Initiative's "Fellowship of the Song" residency.
