Dr. Jana Fried is an Assistant Professor at Coventry University's Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR). Her research focuses on community-based approaches to global challenges such as food systems inequity, environmental risk perception, and community resilience. She has conducted fieldwork across South Africa, Canada, and the UK, addressing issues like invasive species management, water resource allocation, and urban food gardening benefits.
Her expertise spans transdisciplinary collaborations, participatory action research, and qualitative methodologies. Key projects include the Royal Society-funded APEX Award for Sub-Saharan African climate resilience, the EU-funded REWAISE project on sustainable water cycles, and the REPAS initiative tackling plastic contamination in urban soils. Fried has secured funding from organizations including the Belmont Forum, SSHRC, and Horizon 2020.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to zero hunger, clean water, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, and life on land. Recent research emphasizes urban soil care, circular economy models, and stakeholder engagement in environmental governance. She actively supervises PhD students and advises on community food systems and FEW (food-energy-water) nexus transitions.
Awards include the Royal Society APEX Award (2024–2026). Her grants total over £multi-million across 9 active/finished projects. Fried's research outputs span 35 publications, with h-index 12 and 679 citations.
