Dr. Jan Wiegner is a Researcher at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, specifically within the Energy & Resources department. He holds dual Master's degrees in Energy Science from Utrecht University (2020) and Economics from University Bayreuth, Germany (2022), along with additional qualifications in Engineering and Business Administration (2018) and International Economics and Development (2017) from the same German institution.
His research focuses on energy system modeling, mathematical optimization, and applied data science, with particular emphasis on sustainable energy transition pathways. Wiegner specializes in offshore wind integration in the North Sea region, hydrogen applications in power systems, and carbon dioxide utilization technologies. His interdisciplinary approach combines policy analysis, legal research, and mathematical optimization of large-scale multi-energy systems.
Wiegner has developed AdOpT-NET0, a bottom-up energy system model used within his research group. His recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate expertise across energy engineering, chemical engineering, and sustainability fields, with particular focus on offshore wind integration, hydrogen energy systems, and carbon capture technologies. His work spans both theoretical modeling and practical applications for sustainable energy transition.
As an educator, Wiegner has served as Teaching Assistant for multiple energy-related courses at both bachelor and master levels at Utrecht University since 2020, including Energy Conversion Technologies I & II and Applied Thermodynamics. Previously at University Bayreuth, he taught Microeconomics, Economic Policy, and served as Visiting Lecturer for Economic Analysis of Law.
