PD Dr. Jan Wessel is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Transport Economics, University of Münster. He holds a PhD in Economics (2020) and completed his habilitation in 2025, earning a teaching qualification in economics. His research focuses on transport economics, sustainable mobility, and cycling behavior analysis. Wessel has conducted extensive studies on bicycle traffic dynamics, street space allocation efficiency, and the economic impacts of infrastructure investments.
Education: BSc/MSc in Economics from University of Münster (2012-2017), PhD in 2020. Professional background includes roles as research associate (2017-present) and later Associate Professor. He has presented research globally, including at the ITEA Conferences in Berlin, Hong Kong, and Chicago.
Recent work includes analyzing e-bike adoption effects on CO2 emissions (2025), fuel price impacts on cycling (2024), and street space optimization models (2023). His research has been recognized with the Richard J. Arnott Best Paper Prize (2023) and other awards. Wessel advises on transport policy matters and collaborates with institutions like the Federal Ministry of Transport.
