Jan Verlin is a Lecturer in Political Science at Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 and a researcher affiliated with the Triangle UMR 5206 research unit. He holds additional roles including Deputy Director of the Geopolitical Risk Chair at École Normale Supérieure and membership in the CrisisLab at Sciences Po. His research focuses on crisis management, humanitarian studies, and the sociopolitical dimensions of scientific practices in colonial and postcolonial contexts. Verlin's work bridges political sociology with empirical studies on international crises, emphasizing decision-making under uncertainty, humanitarian ethics, and the historical role of scientific infrastructure in colonial territories.
Education: PhD in Political Sociology from University Paris Nanterre (2017), followed by multiple postdoctoral positions (2017–2026) in projects such as ANR COMEXT and the H2020 ENGAGE initiative. His postdoctoral research explored geopolitical risk, crisis preparedness, and the sociology of humanitarian intervention.
Research interests include crisis professionals' decision-making processes, the temporal and spatial dynamics of humanitarian action, and the historical entanglements of science and colonialism. His recent work examines scientific outposts in French overseas territories and the role of social media in disaster management.
Key contributions include analyzing Haiti’s post-2010 humanitarian landscape and volcanic crisis governance in overseas French territories. His publications span journals like Science as Culture, Risk, Hazards & Crisis in Public Policy, and Critique Internationale.
