Jan Tønnesen

Jan Tønnesen is a CSIC Scientist at the Biofisika Institute (CSIC, EHU) and Scientific Director of the Basque Resource for Advanced Light Microscopy (BRALM), affiliated with the University of the Basque Country (EHU) in Leioa, Spain. He leads the Neuronal Excitability Laboratory, focusing on cutting-edge neuroscience research using advanced imaging technologies.

His research interests lie at the intersection of neuronal function and high-resolution imaging. He investigates neuronal excitability, synaptic dynamics, and cellular mechanisms in the brain, utilizing state-of-the-art light microscopy techniques. His work contributes to understanding fundamental processes in neural circuits and brain function.

Dr. Tønnesen has received recognition through the prestigious Ramón y Cajal Fellowship, supporting his independent research career in Spain. His leadership extends to directing BRALM, a key infrastructure for advanced microscopy in the Basque research ecosystem.

He completed his Master in Biology at the University of Copenhagen (2004), earned his PhD at Lund University's Wallenberg Neuroscience Center (2010), and conducted postdoctoral research at the Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuroscience, University of Bordeaux (2010–2015). He previously held a researcher position at INSERM, France, before joining the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience and EHU in 2016.

His laboratory, the Neuronal Excitability Laboratory, operates within the Biofisika Institute, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation in neuroscience research.
