Jan Szaif

Jan Szaif is Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Davis. Educated at Free University of Berlin (PhD 1993, MA 1988) and University of Cambridge, he specializes in ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Plato, Aristotelian ethics/metaphysics, and historical concepts of truth/being. His mentors included Ernst Tugendhat and Myles Burnyeat.

Major publications address:

• Platonic and Aristotelian epistemology
• Peripatetic ethics and virtue theory
• Historical development of ontological concepts
• Bioethical implications of genetic manipulation

He has held fellowships at Oxford University (1997-98) and Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies (2002).
