Jan Smoleński is a political scientist and Lecturer at the American Studies Center, University of Warsaw. He specializes in political theory and comparative politics, focusing on federalism, democracy, sovereignty, and the spatial dimensions of political power. His current research investigates federalism as an alternative to the modern state, with a side project exploring colonial epistemologies in American International Relations theories.
Education: PhD Candidate in Politics at The New School for Social Research (NSSR), MPhil from NSSR, MA in Political Science (Central European University), and Magister of Philosophy (University of Warsaw). Awards include the Katarzyna Kalwinska Fellowship (2017-2018), Fulbright Self-Placed Graduate Student Award (2012-2013), and the Janey 2014 Summer Research Grant.
Research interests span political theory (sovereignty, constituent power, democratic theory), comparative politics (borders, state-formation, Latin America), and spatial politics (geopolitics, political geography). He has authored/co-authored articles on federalism, sovereignty, and decolonial epistemologies, published in journals like Journal of International Relations and Development and Politik.
Teaching includes courses on American Federalism, Political Thought, and the role of social media in modern politics. He has held editorial roles at Canon: The Interdisciplinary Journal of the New School and Central European University Political Science Journal.
Professional experience includes journalism at Krytyka Polityczna and Tygodnik Powszechny, as well as editorial work and academic presentations at institutions like the University of Warwick and the Canadian Political Science Association.
