Jan-Philipp Ahrens is a distinguished academic at the University of Mannheim, holding a venia legendi (habilitation) from the Faculty of Business Administration. He serves as Head of the Research Department for Family Businesses and Head of the Interdisciplinary Research Group Family Firms. His academic career spans teaching at bachelor's, master's, and PhD levels in Strategic and International Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, Family Business Management, and Applied Econometrics.
Dr. Ahrens completed his habilitation in Business Studies at the University of Mannheim (2016-2024), following graduate studies in Economics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (2011-2013) and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (2010-2011). His scholarly journey reflects a deep commitment to understanding organizational dynamics through both theoretical and empirical lenses.
His research focuses on sustainable business practices, social impact, and digitalization within family firms and entrepreneurial contexts. Dr. Ahrens has established himself as a leading scholar in family business research, with particular expertise in CEO succession, gender diversity in leadership, crisis management, and the intersection of family firms with regional development. His work bridges theoretical frameworks from strategic management, organizational behavior, and economics to address critical questions in family business sustainability and performance, with a special emphasis on how leadership characteristics, succession processes, and governance structures influence organizational outcomes in family-controlled enterprises.
Dr. Ahrens' scholarly contributions have earned him more than 35 international peer-reviewed awards and recognitions, including the University of Mannheim's Equality Prize and the University of Passau's 'Extraordinary Commitment' award for his volunteer work with the Science Hub for Europe, Sustainability Hub, and support for Ukrainian students. As an educator and mentor, Dr. Ahrens has coached more than 25 startup founding teams and actively supervises thesis students pursuing academic careers in family business and entrepreneurship. Dr. Ahrens leads the 'Flying Academic Circus' - Interdisciplinary Research Group on Family Firms at the University of Mannheim, which has established itself as a premier research hub for family business studies. The group organizes major conferences including the Mannheim Castle Days and collaborates with international scholars through the European Academy of Management Family Business Research SIG, creating a vibrant scholarly community dedicated to advancing knowledge in this critical area of business research.
