Jan Paeshuyse serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosystems within KU Leuven's Faculty of Bioscience Engineering, where he leads the Animal and Human Health Engineering (A2H) research group. He chairs the Biosafety Committee and holds key memberships in the Animal Ethics Commission, Faculty Council, and Department Council, reflecting his institutional leadership in biosafety and ethical oversight of animal research.
His research centers on Host-Pathogen Interactions in Livestock, with specialized focus on molecular virology of pestiviruses and development of therapeutics, vaccines, and immune modulators. Core methodologies integrate One Health principles across:
- Virology and immunopathology of livestock diseases
- CRISPR-based and phage-derived diagnostic platforms
- In-silico vaccine design and immunobiotechnology
- Eco-epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens in pastoral communities
Recent publications reveal intensive fieldwork in Ethiopia targeting lumpy skin disease, Rift Valley fever, and bovine viral diarrhea, with growing emphasis on computational vaccinology and microbiome-host interactions. Over 60% of his 2024-2025 output addresses livestock health challenges in resource-limited settings through interdisciplinary collaborations.
Professor Paeshuyse actively supervises doctoral candidates including Regassa, Megersa, Lyimu, and Jacobs, while directing eight major grants totaling over €2.3M in funding. Current projects span:
- Vaccine development for poultry pathogens (Ethiopia)
- Diagnostic kits for lumpy skin disease
- Immuno-nutritional strategies for livestock
- Duck hepatitis B models for human therapeutics
He co-leads KU Leuven's One Health Institute, driving cross-faculty initiatives that bridge veterinary science, human medicine, and environmental health through the A2H research cluster.
