Jan Komárek

Jan Komárek is a Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen, affiliated with iCourts - Centre of Excellence for International Courts and Governance. He joined the university in September 2017 after serving as Assistant and Associate Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) for seven years. As Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant project 'IMAGINE: European Constitutional Imaginaries: Utopias, Ideologies and the Other' since February 2019, he leads research on constitutional theory and European integration.

Research focuses on normative dimensions of adjudication and legal reasoning within EU and comparative constitutional contexts. Key interests include:

• Constitutional theory of the EU and judicial legitimacy frameworks
• Comparative analysis of constitutional systems and adjudication practices
• Law's intersection with political economy and intellectual history
• European constitutional imaginaries through utopian and ideological lenses

Recent publications predominantly explore constitutional imaginaries, ideology critique, and epistemic foundations of European integration, employing interdisciplinary approaches combining legal theory with political philosophy.

Supervises PhD candidates in areas of judicial legitimacy (normative approaches) and ideologies of European constitutionalism. Leads the ERC-funded IMAGINE research project examining utopian dimensions of constitutional discourse.

Affiliated with iCourts research center, which examines international courts and governance structures through interdisciplinary legal scholarship. Maintains editorial roles at European Constitutional Law Review and European Law Open journals.
