Jan Kampshoff is an active Visiting Professor for Design and Elemental Construction at the Peter Behrens School of Arts, part of the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf since October 2024. Previously, he served as a Visiting Professor for Design and Construction at TU Berlin from 2017-2024 and for Design and Building Science in 2024. His academic career spans multiple institutions including the University of Innsbruck, University of Kassel, University of Auckland, and Bergische Universität Wuppertal.
His educational background includes a Master of Arts in Architecture from Fachhochschule Münster (2001-2004) with distinction for outstanding thesis work, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the same institution (1997-2001). He also participated in a Summerschool on Architectural Heritage at Riga Technical University in 2003.
Kampshoff's research focuses on contemporary conceptual design and construction methods, understanding architecture as part of cultural production engaged in active discourse with neighboring artistic, theoretical, and technical disciplines. His work explores the complex and dynamic process of architectural practice, developing robust practices, strategies, methods, and representation forms that address architecture's societal relevance.
His recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate a strong focus on sustainable architecture, existing building stock transformation, and architectural interventions at the intersection of art and urbanism. The publications reveal a consistent engagement with elemental construction, spatial experience, and the relationship between architecture and cultural context, particularly evident in works like 'Sorge um den Bestand' and 'Blaue Stunde im Spreepark'.
His scientific recognition includes significant awards such as the Mies van der Rohe Award nomination (2024), DAM Preis shortlist (2024), and the German Architecture Award recognition (2015). His work with modulorbeat has been consistently recognized with prestigious nominations and awards throughout his career.
As co-founder of modulorbeat (since 2004), Kampshoff has established a practice known for projects at the intersection of architecture, art, and urbanism. His civic engagement is substantial, serving as Chairman of Freihaus ms e.V. since 2017, board member of Westfälischer Kunstverein since 2015, and co-initiator of the university network 'Gemeinsam für die Bauwende' since 2024. He is also a supporting member of Architects for Future and founding member of Ruhrmoderne.
Kampshoff's work connects academic research with practical architectural intervention, bridging the gap between theoretical discourse and built reality through his dual role as educator and practicing architect.
