Jan Hemming is a Professor of Systematic Musicology at the University of Kassel since 2005. He holds a doctoral degree from the University of Bremen (1997-2000) with a thesis on "Talent and Self-Concept. A qualitative study among semi-professional musicians in rock and pop". His research focuses on music psychology, pop music studies, media technology, 20th/21st century music aesthetics, cultural studies, and gender studies. He has held academic positions at the Universities of Bremen and Halle-Wittenberg prior to his current role.
He is actively involved in professional societies including the Society for Music Research (since 2006), German Society for Music Psychology (since 1997), and International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). His work bridges empirical and theoretical approaches, with notable contributions to understanding earworm phenomena, musical competency measurement, and interdisciplinary research strategies in musicology.
Key publications include foundational texts on systematic musicology methodology, edited volumes from international conferences, and studies on contemporary music technologies like blockchain's potential in music research. His recent work emphasizes critical analysis of popular music studies' disciplinary boundaries and methodological innovations.
