Jan Haas is a Senior Lecturer in Geomatics Research at Karlstad University, Sweden. He holds a PhD in remote sensing and geographic information technology (GIT) and is actively involved in interdisciplinary research projects. His academic affiliations include the Department of Geomatics and collaborative centers like the Centrum for Societal Risk Research (CSR) and Centrum for Research on Sustainable Societal Transformation (CRS).
His research focuses on method development in GIS and remote sensing for sustainability and climate adaptation, particularly addressing human and ecological well-being. He teaches undergraduate courses in Surveying Technology, Geographical IT, and the Programme in Surveying and Mapping. Jan currently co-supervises 3 PhD students and collaborates with institutions like MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency), the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Swedish Transport Administration.
Key research themes include urban ecosystem services, disaster risk modeling (e.g., cloudburst disasters), social vulnerability to climate risks, and remote sensing applications in Rwanda and sub-Saharan Africa. His work bridges technical geospatial solutions with societal impact, emphasizing evidence-based policy recommendations.
Jan has contributed to projects like 'DEPRIMAP' (urban sustainability in the Global South) and 'SweDigArch'. Notable collaborations span disciplines such as Biology, Risk Studies, and Sustainable Transformation. He co-authored a vulnerability index for climate risks in Sweden and has published extensively on topics ranging from healthcare accessibility in informal settlements to flood exposure modeling.
His teaching portfolio includes technical courses in geomatics, while his advisory role extends to government agencies. Research outputs combine methodological innovation with applied problem-solving, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary solutions for global challenges.
