Jan D. Miller is the Ivor D. Thomas Distinguished Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah, where he has been a faculty member since 1968. He served as Department Chair from 2002–2013 and became a Distinguished Professor in 2008.

Miller’s research focuses on mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, and X-ray microtomography for 3D characterization of multiphase particulate systems. His work includes patents on oil sands processing, resin recovery from coal, and air-sparged hydrocyclone technology.
He has supervised over 100 graduate students, many of whom hold tenured faculty or administrative positions globally. His research funding grew from $1.7 million to $6.6 million during his chairmanship, and he has secured over 30 patents generating $750,000 in royalties.
