Dr. Jan Cölln serves as a Researcher at the Institute of German Studies within the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Rostock, where he teaches Early German Literature and the History of the German Language while providing academic advising for teacher training programs.
Education:
- Studied German, Latin, and Italian philology at the University of Göttingen with an academic year at the University of Bologna
- Received doctorate in 1996 from Göttingen with dissertation on Christoph Martin Wieland
His research centers on literary tradition history, particularly Wieland's works and Alexander the Great's evolution in medieval/modern literature, alongside academic institutional history (Rostock Institute and GDR German Studies), and poetic communication strategies in lyrical songs. He examines aesthetic functions of narrative literature through formal artistry and rhetorical structures, bridging historical context with literary theory.
Recent publications reveal sustained focus on medieval German textual traditions, especially Middle High German poetry and Alexander romance narratives, combined with critical analysis of German studies' disciplinary development in East and West Germany.
As subject advisor for teacher training, Dr. Cölln manages credit transfers, student placements, and curriculum design while organizing introductory events for new students. He serves as primary contact for modularization of teacher training programs and library coordination in German studies.
Formerly affiliated with Göttingen's Collaborative Research Center 529 (1996-2001) on 'Internationality of National Literatures,' he has shaped Rostock's German studies programs through administrative leadership and specialized courses in Middle High German.
